Marketing consultant, New Zealand

I'm a New Zealand marketing consultant — Deftly Limited is NZ-registered — working with businesses across the country that need senior marketing help without hiring for it. The work is remote-first: video calls, shared tools, async communication. On-site visits are available where they make sense, at the client's cost.

Working with a New Zealand consultant

Deftly Limited is registered in New Zealand. For a New Zealand client that means straightforward local invoicing in NZD, GST handled the way you’d expect, and no cross-border complication on a purchase order. For an Australian client it means an AUD invoice from the same entity — covered on the Australia page.

What remote-first actually means here

It isn’t a euphemism for hard to reach. It means a specific way of working:

  • A standing weekly call, in your calendar, not rescheduled.
  • Shared tools, not email attachments. I work inside your systems — your CRM, your drive, your project tool — so nothing lives only in my inbox.
  • Async by default between calls. Messages get answered within a working day. Anything urgent gets a phone call.
  • I attend the meetings that matter. Sales pipeline reviews, leadership meetings, launch planning. Being part-time doesn’t mean being outside the room.

The New Zealand context

The market here is small, which changes the maths. Referral and reputation do more work than paid acquisition in most sectors. Budgets are tighter than the playbooks written for the US assume, so tactics that need six figures behind them to work are simply the wrong tactics. And the total addressable market is often small enough to name every prospect — which makes targeted, unglamorous outbound and a well-kept CRM more valuable than broad-reach campaigns.

Most New Zealand businesses I work with turn over between $500K and $10M, and have either no marketing person or one junior doing everything. That’s the gap this fills.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions.

  • Deftly Limited is a New Zealand company and New Zealand is home. I travel, so I work remote-first by design rather than promising to be in any particular city on any particular week. In practice that makes no difference to how the work runs — my New Zealand clients and my Australian ones are served the same way.

  • When it earns its cost, yes — a kickoff, a strategy day, a launch. Most of the work doesn't need it. If I'm already where you are there's no charge; otherwise travel is at your cost and agreed in advance. I'd rather be honest about that than pretend proximity is free.

  • Retainers are scoped to the engagement and invoiced in NZD, GST-inclusive where applicable. For a number, book a call — it depends on how much of the function you want handled.

  • Both happen. Sometimes I'm the person who finally gives your agency a brief worth executing, and holds them to it. Sometimes the agency turns out to be doing work you could stop paying for. I don't take a referral fee from anyone, which means I have no reason to keep an agency in place that isn't earning its retainer.
